Sania Mirza breaks into top 5008 August, 2005
India's Sania Mirza created history when she broke into the top fifty of WTA rankings. Mirza who was ranked 59 last week jumped up eleven places to reach clinch the 48th ranking. This is attributed to her fine performance in the Acura Classic tournament in which she beat the No. 4 seed Nadia Petrova before going down fighting to Akiko Morigami.
Sania Mirza is the first Indian woman to reach the top-50 spot. The previous best by an Indian woman was in 1997 when Nirupama Vaidyanathan was ranked 134.
